Man charged with sharing asylum seeker addresses

Norfolk Police said the disclosure involved number of addresses, and crowds later targeted homes believed to house asylum seekers.

  • On August 17, authorities charged 62-year-old James Jobson with misconduct in public office after information about addresses in Thetford was released and properties were subsequently targeted during violent disorder.
  • A list identifying properties believed to house asylum seekers circulated online in Thetford earlier this month, prompting crowds to gather outside homes and attempt to force entry.
  • In one incident, Norfolk Police reported 'The group were shouting and preventing a workman from leaving. A resident of the same property reported a group of between 30 and 50 people trying to get into the house.' Five men were escorted from another property.
  • Jobson appeared at Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody. He is due at Norwich Crown Court on September 14 for the next hearing.
  • ITV reported that Jobson does not work for a police force, and Norfolk Police have not publicly identified his specific public role. This clarifies the case does not involve a police data leak.
