Man charged in shooting outside Columbia Planned Parenthood
Mark Baumgartner faces felony charges after pepper-spraying and shooting a man during a confrontation outside a Columbia Planned Parenthood clinic, police said.
- On Nov. 25, Mark Baumgartner, 56, was booked and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after the Nov. 14 shooting near the Planned Parenthood Columbia clinic on Middleburg Drive.
- Photographs and witness accounts place members in lime-green hi-visibility vests at the same spot outside the Planned Parenthood Columbia clinic where A Moment of Hope volunteers routinely line the street, especially on Fridays.
- Cellphone and surveillance footage captured the confrontation as a man in a lime-green vest sprayed another, chased him into a parking lot, scuffled with a third man, and a gunshot followed; Columbia Police Department reviewed the video, spoke with witnesses, and consulted prosecutors before charging Baumgartner.
- The unidentified victim was hospitalized and has since been released, police said, while Baumgartner posted a $50,000 cash bond and was ordered to stay away from the clinic, as a petition with 423 signatures calls for A Moment of Hope to cut ties.
- The charges expose Baumgartner to legal penalties that include up to 20 years and a mandatory five‑year sentence, police say the incident began with a verbal altercation and declined to link it to Planned Parenthood’s services, citing an ongoing investigation.
