Man Treated in Hospital After Shark Bite Off Co Waterford Coast
The man suffered a leg injury after a blue shark bite, and rescue crews from RNLI and the Irish Coast Guard airlifted him for treatment.
- On Tuesday, a man was airlifted to Cork University Hospital after suffering a shark bite while on a 5-metre pleasure craft off County Waterford near Ram Head, Ardmore.
- It is understood the man sustained a leg injury while attempting to control a blue shark after pulling the animal on board the vessel, according to Coast Guard reports.
- Coordinating the evacuation, Irish Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 117, Ballycotton RNLI, and Youghal RNLI worked together; Coxswain Eolan Walsh called it "a well-coordinated multi-agency response."
- Remaining group members did not require assistance, and the pleasure craft returned safely to Dungarvan while the injured man remains under HSE care at the hospital.
- Dr. Nicholas Payne, a marine biologist at Trinity College Dublin, noted such encounters are "very uncommon," though blue sharks are common in Irish waters from April through November and require great caution.
