NO LOC, JUL 14 – James Lewis faces charges after neglecting three dogs chained outside for a week in extreme heat, causing one dog to suffer fatal organ failure, police said.
- Robert Peters, a man from Oklahoma, was formally accused on Friday of abusing animals after authorities discovered 16 dogs either deceased or critically injured inside a box truck in Missouri.
- Peters and his wife operated an animal transport business out of their home in Oklahoma, and the dire conditions involved mislabeling and no crate labeling during transport.
- Officers found dogs with body temperatures over 100 degrees, some bleeding and lethargic from heat, and four animals were dead while 12 were in poor condition inside the truck.
- Brooke Thompson, rescue president who arranged transport for a dog named Captain, confirmed his survival through pictures but said, “He’s not in the best of health that he was before.”
- Peters remains in Missouri custody, and authorities, including ACO and police, are continuing investigations amid strong community concern and rescue involvement.
