Man Accused of Killing Toronto Cop Appears in Court by Video From Hospital Bed
The accused appeared by video from St. Michael's Hospital and can apply for bail later in Superior Court, officials said.
Nicholas Bennett, accused of fatally shooting a Toronto officer, appeared in court via video from his hospital bed today to formally face a first-degree murder charge.
Police allege Bennett killed Const. Marc Pinizzotto last Thursday during a raid related to earlier shootings; Bennett has remained hospitalized since the incident after being shot by police.
After regaining consciousness this morning, Bennett participated in a video court appearance from St. Michael's Hospital where a justice of the peace confirmed he understood the proceedings.
Bennett will return to court by video on Monday, with the possibility of applying for bail in Superior Court at a later date.
In related developments, Sheldon Tracy-Stewart and Zara Jabbi face charges related to the consulate shootings, while a funeral for Pinizzotto is planned for next week.
