Militants linked to al-Qaida have burned around 100 fuel trucks heading to Mali's capital. A local trade union reported this on Tuesday.
By imposing a blockade on the cities of Kayes and Nioro of the Sahel, in the western part of the country, and by multiplying attacks on the roads leading to the capital, the GSIM is trying to weaken the junta of Assimi Goïta economically.
In Mali, Jnim jihadists attacked on Sunday 14 September a large convoy of tank trucks from Senegal, which were travelling towards Bamako under military escort. A similar attack had already taken place on Saturday. Several dozen of these vehicles were destroyed and soldiers killed. Jnim has imposed a blockade in the Kayes area since 3 September. The army claims to have "strongly reacted".
For a week, in early September, the jihadist group imposed a blockade on the roads linking Mali to its neighbours. An unprecedented and revealing operation of the new JNIM strategy, which aims to suffocate the country's economic lungs while forcing the armed forces to disperse.
