  • On Nov 11, the death toll from a boat sinking near Langkawi, Malaysia, rose to 27 as Malaysian and Thai authorities widened searches for dozens missing near the border.
  • Fleeing persecution, more than 5,100 Rohingya boarded boats this year, seeking Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, with nearly 600 reported dead or missing.
  • About 300 people boarded a vessel two weeks ago and were transferred onto two smaller boats; thirteen survivors have been rescued since Saturday while 12 people found dead included two children.
  • Romli Mustafa, regional director at the agency, said Thai search teams will widen coverage around Koh Tarutao and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency will continue searches until Saturday after nine bodies were recovered on Tuesday, including one in Thailand.
  • Two organisations offered support and called for cooperation, warning refugees will continue dangerous journeys until root causes are resolved, while Malaysia does not recognise refugee status and detains Rohingya in recent years.
