Malaysia de-registers main opposition bloc as elections loom
The move follows a dispute between PN’s key parties and could force its members to contest elections separately, officials said.
On Tuesday, the Registrar of Societies cancelled the registration of Perikatan Nasional after the coalition's explanation failed to refute grounds for deregistration. The Registrar stated, "we have decided to cancel Perikatan's registration" under Subparagraph 13 of the Societies Act.
RoS issued a notice on September 22 requiring Perikatan to provide explanations regarding matters raised under Subsection 13 of the Societies Act. The coalition submitted its response on October 12.
After examining submitted documents, RoS found the coalition's explanations failed to refute the grounds for deregistration. The Registrar stressed that every registered organization must ensure compliance with the Societies Act and its own constitution.
Perikatan previously faced internal disputes after Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia complained to RoS about the party's position within the coalition. This conflict preceded the recent regulatory action.
The Registrar affirmed it will continue carrying out regulatory and enforcement functions to ensure orderly, transparent, and integrity-driven governance of societies. The department emphasized its commitment to acting in accordance with the law.
