Majority of Americans express ‘fear and concern’ about AI, say government should regulate it more: CNN poll

According to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, 75% of Americans view AI development with fear and concern rather than excitement, with broad bipartisan agreement that the federal government is not doing enough to regulate it.
Looking closer to home, Americans are more likely to report negative financial impacts from AI, with 48% citing harm versus 18% seeing positive outcomes. This personal financial anxiety drives widespread apprehension about AI's rapid pace.
Within the GOP, an ideological divide emerges: 64% of non-MAGA Republicans say the government isn't doing enough to regulate AI, compared to 52% of MAGA-identified Republicans. Democrats are 26 points more likely than Republicans to express concern about data centers.
With midterms approaching in November, nearly two-thirds of registered voters say data centers and AI will be a significant factor in their vote for Congress, with 36% calling it extremely important. Political groups have poured more than $31 million into ads this year.
Unusual political alliances have formed around AI regulation, with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Trump strategist Steve Bannon calling for curbs on development. President Donald Trump dismissed these concerns as a "HOAX," touting potential economic gains instead.
