Major incident declared over wildfire in North Wales - as parts of UK face risk of 'exceptional' blazes
Fire crews and partner agencies are battling the blaze in challenging conditions as residents evacuate and operations are expected to continue for some time.
On Sunday, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident following a large-scale wildfire near Sychnant Pass on Conwy Mountain, forcing residents in parts of Capelulo to evacuate their homes.
Scorching heatwave conditions across England and Wales have created an 'exceptional' wildfire risk, according to The Met Office, as the UK experiences its third heatwave of the year with temperatures repeatedly exceeding 30C.
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service Delivery Manager Jami Jennings warned firefighters are battling 'challenging conditions' to protect communities, urging the public to avoid disposable barbecues and "report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999."
Local resident Rita Raweily joined evacuation efforts as officials designated The Gladstone Inn as a rest center for affected residents; authorities confirmed everyone remains safe despite one hospitalization.
Natural England's fire severity index indicates the area of 'exceptional' risk is set to spread to the South East and east of England by the middle of next week as forecasters expect hot, dry weather to persist.
