Maine Med Nurses Celebrate Release of Colleague From ICE Custody
The Maine Medical Center nurse was detained after traveling through Boston Logan International Airport, and supporters said she was legally authorized to work while her asylum case was pending.
On Thursday, Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, announced the release of Debora Kapisha, a registered nurse at Maine Medical Center, from ICE custody after a week in detention.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained the 28-year-old nurse at Boston Logan International Airport on July 30. Officials claim she overstayed a visa, while supporters emphasize her pending asylum case and work authorization.
More than 200 nurses and supporters rallied outside the Portland hospital on Wednesday, demanding her immediate release. Organized in under 24 hours, the Maine State Nurses Association's event pressured authorities to keep her in New England.
"I am so thankful to be home," Kapisha said in a statement Friday. Her asylum case remains pending despite the release, with colleagues continuing to advocate for her status.
Nurses continue urging MaineHealth to sponsor Kapisha for permanent residency. Britt Crewse, president of MaineHealth's Southern Region, expressed concern about immigration enforcement's impact on immigrant staff members.
