Judge allows Trump administration to end deportation protections for thousands of Ethiopians
On Tuesday, District Judge Brian Murphy allowed the President Donald Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for over 5,000 Ethiopians living and working in the United States.
A June Supreme Court decision curtailed judicial review of Homeland Security efforts to end TPS designations for 13 countries, including protections previously granted to migrants from Haiti and Syria.
Murphy rejected arguments that Homeland Security lacked authority to terminate the designations, aligning with recent decisions by other judges regarding migrants from South Sudan, Myanmar, and Somalia.
James Percival, general counsel for Homeland Security, hailed the decision in a social media post, declaring, "All TPS terminations are in effect!"
Although Murphy dismissed procedural challenges, he allowed plaintiffs to continue litigating claims that the termination violated the Fifth Amendment by targeting migrants based on national origin or race.
