Helena man gets life in prison in shooting death of ex-girlfriend

  • Kenneth William Greene, a 62-year-old Helena man, was sentenced Wednesday in Lewis and Clark County District Court to life in prison without the possibility of parole for shooting his 42-year-old ex-girlfriend, Bernadette Johnson, on June 21 outside the La Quinta Inn and Suites at 701 Washington St., in Helena.
  • The shooting occurred while Bernadette Johnson was dropping off her new boyfriend, Cornelius Mitchell, who worked at the La Quinta Inn and Suites.
  • Greene was convicted in January after a three-day trial of felony deliberate homicide and a weapon enhancement, with prosecutors noting eight prior felony convictions, some involving violent offenses against previous partners.
  • During Wednesday's hearing, Prosecutor Daniel Baris quoted Greene as having told Bernadette, "the next time he was going to prison, he was going for life," while Johnson's son, D'angelo Gardipee, stated, "They say hell is the place you go after you live, but hell is the state in which we are living now because of this."
  • Judge Mike McMahon sentenced Greene on March 26, imposing the maximum sentence of life without parole and urging Johnson's family and friends not to let Greene win by dwelling on him, while also stating, "Your mother, sister and friend was described as a very loving and compassionate person who went out of her way to help others.
