Maine couple spots a bear chasing a moose calf and helps it escape
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, Todd and Elvia Malcolm of Lincoln intervened to save a moose calf from a black bear attack in Telos Township, Maine, using their truck to block the bear's pursuit and reunite the calf with its mother.
While parked along Telos Road to observe wildlife, the Malcolms noticed a cow moose acting agitated and grunting as if calling to her calf. Suddenly, the bear and calf charged out of the trees directly toward their vehicle.
Todd Malcolm steered his truck between the animals, forcing the bear to jump aside and streak into the woods. Elvia Malcolm captured clear action shots of the chase through the truck's windshield, remaining safely inside the vehicle.
The calf safely reunited with its mother immediately after the bear retreated. Elvia Malcolm expressed relief, saying "My heart was racing because I did not want to witness the bear catching the calf."
After ensuring the animals were safe, the couple continued to their planned fishing spot in Piscataquis County, where they caught brook trout. Todd Malcolm later described the encounter as "fit for a nature documentary.
