Mahmood expected to announce changes to rules around indefinite leave to remain
The consultation drew 200,000 responses as ministers weigh longer waits for settlement and possible exemptions for social care staff.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to announce final decisions on immigration rules for legal migrants next week, with the Home Office withholding details until presentation to Parliament.
Originally, Mahmood proposed extending the wait for permanent settlement from five years to 10, with some lower-paid migrants facing a 15-year wait, citing concerns about eligibility following high net migration.
Government consultations on these reforms drew 200,000 responses, while Housing Secretary Angela Rayner previously described the proposals as "un-British" because they changed requirements for migrants who arrived in good faith.
Revised proposals will likely exempt social care workers already in the country from longer waiting periods, reversing their previous exposure to a wait of up to 15 years rather than five.
Conservative spokespeople accused Mahmood of "caving in to pressure" from Rayner and other MPs, claiming the revision is a "slap in the face to British taxpayers" who subsidize low-wage migrants.
