Despite the massive rush of sargazo on the beaches of Mahahual, the hotel occupation remained at 70% during the first weekend of the holiday season and they have had only 5% cancellations, a percentage lower than projected. Gerardo Pérez Zafra, hotel representative on the Costa Maya, commented that “we are confident that, over the next few days, we can reach up to 95 percent occupation,” he said.
