Magnitude 6.5 quake hits Indonesia's Papua, USGS says
- On Thursday, the United States Geological Survey said an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck Papua province around 2:48 pm local time .
- The USGS located the epicentre at 2.31 degrees south latitude and 138.86 degrees east near Abepura, with depths between 35 kilometres and 70 km.
- The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami warning has been issued for the Papua quake, but the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for southern Mindanao and North Sulawesi.
- Authorities said there were no immediate damage or casualties and airports and flight operations remained functional with no flights hit.
- Following a string of regional quakes, including a magnitude 6.5 quake and a 6.4 reading recorded by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency , the event comes a day after a 7.4-magnitude quake that killed at least seven people.
