Maersk Completes First Ethanol Bunkering in US Testing Bioethanol
The milestone gives Maersk and POET real-world data on infrastructure, sourcing and supply-chain needs as the shipping company tests alternative fuels.
Maersk recently completed the first ship-to-ship commercial ethanol bunkering of a container vessel in the United States, using 100% U.S.-produced corn ethanol aboard the Tangier Maersk.
Because ethanol and methanol share similar properties, existing methanol-capable dual-fuel marine engines can operate on ethanol with little or no modification, building on trials aboard the Laura Maersk and Antonia Maersk.
POET, the world's largest bioethanol producer, supplied the fuel, while Kirby Corporation and the Port of Houston provided critical infrastructure and port coordination for the operation.
Also on Monday, Growth Energy released a report identifying ethanol as technically ready for commercial shipping, though researchers noted that fueling infrastructure remains a significant obstacle.
Maersk Regional President for North America Ditlev Blicher stated the milestone reflects the company's commitment to exploring multiple future fuel pathways as it works to decarbonize operations.
