Earthquake Shakes New Jersey And New York Again: USGS

BERGEN COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, AUG 5 – More than 3,000 felt reports describe weak shaking from the magnitude 2.7 quake following a rare magnitude 3.0 tremor in the region, USGS said.

  • The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.7 earthquake struck parts of New Jersey and the New York City area on Tuesday at 12:11 p.m.
  • Due to ancient, deeply buried faults, quake prediction remains difficult, and moderate earthquakes strike the region roughly twice a century, according to the USGS.
  • More than 3,000 people submitted felt reports to the USGS, with the epicenter beneath the Township of Washington about 9.5 miles west of Yonkers, 15 miles northwest of Manhattan, and 18 miles northeast of Newark.
  • A resident of Park Ridge, New Jersey, said it 'felt like a giant truck was barreling past the house', and another described it as 'as bad as Saturday' despite no damage.
  • Because of eastern U.S. geology, even small earthquakes like Saturday's magnitude 3.0 can be felt over a wide area, unlike on the West Coast.
