Lynx could be first UK zoo-born cat freed into the wild
- Newquay Zoo staff sent an eleven-month-old female lynx born at their Cornwall facility to a German centre on April 29, 2025.
- Due to a limited number of female lynxes available within the European breeding program, this lynx was transferred to Germany to undergo training before being released into the mountainous forests of eastern Europe this autumn.
- The lynx, nicknamed Petitia, has received specialised care using feeding strategies to encourage hunting skills needed for wilderness survival.
- Eva Klebelsberg said, "If you know your cats, you know... Once it gets out is able to kill a bird or a mouse," emphasizing key survival traits being monitored.
- This initiative marks the first UK zoo-bred big cat considered for rewilding, advancing European predator restoration and ecosystem health goals.
