On April 26, 1986, the 4th reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine exploded during a test, releasing a large amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Most of the radioactive material fell on Belarus, contaminating about 23 percent of its territory, including about 1.8 million hectares of agricultural land.
