‘Fragile’: An emotional day for Jasper residents one year after devastating wildfire

JASPER, ALBERTA, CANADA, JUL 23 – A rooftop sprinkler activated during the wildfire helped save multiple homes as winds over 100 km/h pushed flames through Jasper, which lost 358 structures, officials said.

  • On July 22, 2024, Christine Declercq flipped on her rooftop sprinkler when an evacuation order was issued, shielding her home and neighbouring houses from the wildfire.
  • Winds over 100 kilometres per hour drove the wildfire into Jasper National Park, Alberta, during a heat wave.
  • The fire destroyed 358 homes and structures, displacing about 5,000 residents and 20,000 visitors.
  • Mental-Health support now includes an in-house psychologist, Nadon said the department has hired to support volunteer firefighters through trauma.
  • Meanwhile, 71 sites remain on hold pending soil-contamination reports, with 114 properties cleared for construction in Jasper's long-term rebuild outlook.
