Barrot hails release of Franco-American tourist in prisoner swap in Venezuela
France's Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Saturday hailed his American counterparts for their role in securing the release of the Franco-American tourist Lucas Hunter who had been held in Venezuela since January.
Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed the release of the thirty-year-old, detained since January, as part of an exchange of prisoners between Caracas and Washington.
This is Lucas Hunter, who was released from prison as part of an exchange between Maduro’s dictatorship and the United States. “I appreciate the efforts of the State Department,” said French Chancellor Jean-Noël Barrot.
Lucas Hunter, a 37-year-old Franco-American, had been detained in Venezuela since January 2025. He was released as part of an agreement with Donald Trump's administration.
He was arrested, according to his relatives, on 7 January on the border between Colombia and Venezuela by Venezuelan agents.
The young man regained freedom after an agreement between the United States and Venezuela to exchange American prisoners for migrants expelled from the United States, and detained in El Salvador
