"Lowering tariffs is positive for consumers, but it's death for domestic industry"

Business organizations in the province of Buenos Aires expressed their “deep concern” at the recent drop in tariffs on the import of footwear, textiles and clothing products. They estimate that of the 30,000 industrial jobs lost over the past year, “more than 10,000 correspond to that chain” and another 50,000 could be lost.

Nearly 30 chambers of the sector said reducing the tax burden on those they produce in the country would have a greater impact on clothing prices, while generating more employment.

In view of the fall in tariffs on imports of textile products, clothing and footwear, the UIA indicated that it is worrying that the trade integration agenda is not accompanied by a competitiveness agenda within the country.
