Lower cost Novo, Lilly weight-loss pills draw patients from compounded drugs, doctors say
Nine U.S. doctors said lower-priced branded pills are drawing patients from compounded versions as insurance coverage stays uneven.
Lower-Priced oral GLP-1 pills from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are prompting patients to switch from compounded medications to branded Wegovy and Foundayo, according to interviews with nine U.S. doctors.
With supply shortages of branded drugs now eased, the Food and Drug Administration is tightening limits on compounded GLP-1 formulations to steer patients toward FDA-approved treatments subject to greater oversight.
Oral Wegovy led to about a 14% weight reduction over 64 weeks, while Foundayo showed an 11% reduction over 72 weeks in separate studies; both pills cost around $149 monthly.
Dr. Jorge Moreno, a Yale Medicine Obesity Specialist, noted that "something about saying it is new creates a little hesitation" in some patients, while insurance coverage remains a persistent challenge for many.
Two of the three largest U.S. pharmacy benefit managers now cover Foundayo, and a government program providing GLP-1 coverage to Medicare patients is set to begin in July and run through 2027.
