Louvre Museum Closed Second Day; Police Race to Find Stolen Jewels

  • On Oct 19, eight priceless items of jewellery were stolen from the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre Museum, Paris between 09:30 and 09:40 shortly after opening.
  • Last month, thieves hit other French museums, causing $700,000 in gold theft and $7.6 million in losses, while Louvre officials earlier this year urged urgent government help to improve security.
  • Disguised as construction workers, they used a truck with an extendable ladder to access the Apollo Gallery, forcing a window in between six and seven minutes.
  • On Oct 20, France ordered a security review at the Louvre and other cultural sites, assigned a specialist police unit, and deployed 60 investigators while the museum remained closed.
  • As France watches, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin admitted, 'What is certain is that we have failed, since people were able to park a furniture hoist in the middle of Paris, get people up it in several minutes to grab priceless jewels, and give France a terrible image,' highlighting security flaws at the Louvre, which had 8.7 million visitors in 2024.
