From 'SNL' Succession Plan to Lorne Michaels' Quirky Habits, Here's What to Know About 'Lorne' Doc
Morgan Neville’s film follows Lorne Michaels through SNL’s 49th season and features cast members who say they still know little about him.
On Friday, Focus Features releases 'Lorne,' a documentary where Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville gains unrestricted access to Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels and his inner circle.
Michaels is a creature of habit who orchestrates SNL with ritualized precision; Neville captures him managing the chaos of the show's 49th season, including Tuesday dinners at Lattanzi restaurant.
The 81-year-old producer told SNL-adjacent Steve Martin he cannot retire because he must 'protect' SNL, showing no succession plan for the show he launched in 1975.
Neville interviewed over 50 people in Michaels' orbit, including Conan O Brien and Canadian Mike Myers, who describe the producer's 'superpower' of fostering a family environment.
The documentary is not a swan song for the 81-year-old showrunner and will eventually stream on Peacock, joining other recent projects celebrating SNL's 50-year history.
