John (“Mad Jack”) Byron, formerly a captain in the Guards, was a man of roguish charm and expensive habits. In 1778 he persuaded the Marchioness of Carmarthen to elope with him, and as soon as her divorce had come through he married her, thus addressing, for a spell, his cashflow issues.
