Utah Valley University President Announces She Will Step Down in May
Tuminez led Utah Valley University to over 20% enrollment growth and doubled graduates before stepping down to focus on family after personal loss.
- President Astrid S. Tuminez today announced she will step down as Utah Valley University president, effective May 1, 2026, to devote more time to family and personal pursuits after seven and a half years.
- Tuminez became UVU's seventh president in fall 2018 and took a sabbatical last spring to grieve nearly one year after Jeffrey S. Tolk, Tuminez's husband, died Feb. 5, 2025.
- Under her leadership UVU increased enrollment by more than 20%, doubled graduates, launched the Kahlert Applied AI Institute, and completed a comprehensive fundraising campaign raising more than $250 million.
- The Utah Board of Higher Education will form a presidential transition team with board members, the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, and UVU trustees, while Commissioner Geoffrey Landward called Tuminez a `deeply thoughtful leader` and pledged a smooth transition.
- She led the university during last September's campus shooting that killed Charlie Kirk and advanced Vision 2030 and Vineyard Campus planning, positioning UVU for future growth.
