Lok Sabha Revolutionizes Attendance with Tech-Forward System
NEW DELHI, INDIA, JUL 14 – Lok Sabha Secretariat introduces a digital attendance system at MPs' seats to reduce lobby congestion and improve transparency, impacting over 500 members, officials said.
- The Lok Sabha will introduce a multi-media device system for MPs to mark attendance from their seats starting in the Monsoon Session beginning July 21, 2025.
- This change aims to replace the lobby register, streamline attendance marking, and reduce overcrowding while addressing MPs marking presence without participating.
- The new attendance system enables MPs to record their presence using I-cards, biometric verification, or PIN codes, while exempts cabinet members and the opposition leader from the requirement to sign in.
- Congress whip Manickam Tagore criticized the rollout as flawed citing the system's failure during the Waqf Board vote and questioned exemptions granted to top leaders.
- In parallel, Lok Sabha will deploy AI-driven multilingual transcription to improve transparency and accessibility of debates, reflecting ongoing efforts to digitize Parliament.
