Local Colombians React to Deadly Earthquake in Colombia
Local Colombians are collecting money and supplies as the death toll from the 7.4-magnitude quake tops 180, organizers said.
- On Monday, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Western Colombia, killing nearly 200 people and injuring more than 3,000. Connecticut Colombians are mobilizing relief efforts in response.
- Organizer John Londono, part of the Colombian American Police Association, helped establish more than a dozen collection sites across the city following the earthquake. Volunteers are gathering first aid supplies and emergency equipment.
- Aura Maria Leiva, owner of Sabores Restaurant in Bridgeport and Orange, is coordinating relief with the Association of Venezuelans in CT . Dr. Pedro Falcon explained the group's logistics experience enables more effective assistance.
- Sabores Restaurant will hold a fundraiser on Sunday, August 16, while relief teams in New York are holding a vigil on Wednesday. Volunteer Catalina Rodriguez said they are trying to provide "a little piece of our hearts."
- Reciprocating past aid, Colombians are mobilizing support four weeks after they assisted Venezuelans following earthquakes in late June. "Listen, this is an opportunity to step up," organizer Londono said.
