UPDATE 3-LNG-Laden Tanker on Fire Off Yemen, EU Naval Mission Says
Rescue efforts continue after an explosion forced the LNG tanker MV Falcon's 26 crew to abandon ship while 15% of the vessel caught fire, EU naval force Aspides reported.
- On Saturday, the LNG-laden tanker MV Falcon was on fire and adrift off Yemen's coast after an explosion forced crew to abandon ship 113 nautical miles southeast of Aden.
- Aspides said the cause was unclear and that 15% of the Cameroon-flagged vessel was on fire, with no missiles or UAVs detected and Houthi officials denying involvement.
- An operation to rescue the crew was underway as a Greek frigate approached the scene, two merchant vessels sailing nearby recovered 24 seafarers, one crew member remained on board, and one was reported missing.
- Aspides advised vessels to keep a safe distance due to explosion risks, as the fully loaded liquefied natural gas tanker disrupted trade flows through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
- The tanker was en route from Oman's Sohar Port to Djibouti, sailing a busy regional route amid repeated attacks by Houthi militants who say they act in solidarity with Palestinians over Israel's war on Gaza.
