LNG Canada produces first liquefied natural gas for export
KITIMAT, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUN 23 – LNG Canada’s Kitimat plant starts partial production with Train 1 at 5.6 million tonnes capacity, aiming to export 14 million tonnes annually and reduce reliance on U.S. markets.
- The Shell-led LNG Canada project began producing its first liquefied natural gas at 4 a.m. local time in Kitimat, British Columbia, on Sunday, 2025-06-23.
- This milestone follows extensive investment and planning by a joint venture including Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Kogas, aiming to export LNG via the Pacific coast.
- The facility’s Train 1, with a capacity of 5.6 million tonnes per annum, is producing LNG at half capacity due to line difficulties, and the first export cargo is expected by early July.
- In 2024, Canada shipped natural gas to the U.S. at a rate of approximately 8.6 bcfd, an increase from about 8.0 bcfd in the previous year, although these exports are expected to decrease once LNG shipments to Asian markets commence.
- The LNG Canada project, costing $40 billion, is the largest private sector investment in Canadian history and is expected to create 300 jobs and reduce sail time to Asia significantly.
