It is exceptional for a firefighter to start a fire, and even then, that does not automatically mean that he is a pyromaniac. This is according to forensic psychiatrist Rudy Verelst following the confession of an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter that he started a fire during the forest fire in Fontainebleau. "Arson can also be a form of antisocial behavior among young people."
One of the suspects who has been charged is a member of the volunteer fire brigade.
The two suspects had admitted the facts in police custody during the week, and they are now in prison.
Charged and placed in pre-trial detention on Wednesday evening, the 18-year-old volunteer firefighter, suspected of starting one of the fires that ravaged the Fontainebleau forest, spent his first night in prison.
