Motorway Closed After Crash Death
National Highways said the southbound motorway is expected to stay closed into the afternoon as police investigate and seek witnesses and dashcam footage.
The M23 is closed southbound between Junction 8 near Merstham and Junction 10 at Crawley following a fatal van crash early Wednesday morning, July 8, 2026.
Sussex Police reported the collision occurred around 01:20 BST at Junction 9, the Gatwick Airport turn-off, where the van crashed between midnight and 1am.
Motorists traveling to Gatwick Airport face congestion on the M25 near the M23 junction, with diversions routed via the A22 and A264 through Copthorne to Junction 10.
Witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage are urged to contact Sussex Police, which is managing the investigation under Operation Oakcross.
National Highways expects the southbound carriageway to remain closed until late afternoon, advising drivers to plan alternative routes before traveling.
