Democrats Sweep Minnesota U.S. Senate, Governor Races
Democrats won an open Senate seat and the governor’s office as Minnesota voters chose the state’s first woman governor, officials said.
On Tuesday, Minnesota voters elected Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan to the U.S. Senate and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar as governor, with both races called for Democrats after polls closed.
Retirement announcements from Governor Tim Walz and U.S. Senator Tina Smith prompted the ballot reshuffling, leaving both high-profile seats open for the first time in several years.
With 73% of precincts reporting at midnight, Flanagan led 55% to 43% over Republican candidate Michele Tafoya, while Klobuchar led 56% to 42% against House Speaker Lisa Demuth.
Flanagan's victory positions her as the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, while voters simultaneously determined control of the narrowly divided state Legislature.
Results remain unofficial until reviewed by county canvassing boards, while voters also weighed a constitutional amendment to increase permanent school fund payouts to 4.5% effective July 1, 2027.
