The Day of the Restoration of the Lithuanian State – February 16 – is also celebrated on Monday at the 2026 Milan and Cortina Olympic Games. There was no biathlon competition in Antholz today, so the large delegation of Lithuanian biathletes was able to meet peacefully and sing the national anthem together. The leader of the biathlon team, Vytautas Strolia, dressed in Lithuanian paraphernalia, told how much this day means to him.
February 16 is a national holiday in Lithuania - the Day of the Restoration of the Lithuanian State, which is counted from the proclamation of the Lithuanian State on February 16, 1918, under German occupation. This is one of the three major holidays for the country, associated with the establishment of statehood and independence.
On the occasion of the Day of the Restoration of the State, President Gitanas Nausėda awarded nearly 40 Lithuanian and foreign citizens with state orders and medals on Monday.
On Monday, Lithuania celebrates the 108th anniversary of the restoration of the state. On this occasion, the main festive events will be held in the country's capital, as well as in other cities. Traditionally, the festive commemoration will begin with a tribute to the signatories of the Lithuanian Independence Act of February 16, 1918, at the Rasai Cemetery. Later, the State Awards Ceremony will be held at the Presidential Palace.
