Electric car grant expanded to offer discount on more new models
The UK government expanded the Electric Car Grant to 22 models, cutting prices by up to £1,500 to boost EV adoption amid a 43% rise in registrations this year.
- The UK Government announced an expansion of the Electric Car Grant scheme in 2025 that cut prices of five more electric cars by up to £1,500 to encourage switching to EVs.
- This expansion builds on concerns that upfront costs slowed electric vehicle adoption, combined with steadily falling prices from European and Chinese manufacturers.
- There are now 22 eligible models including Volkswagen, Peugeot, Cupra, Nissan, Renault, and Vauxhall, with the government investing £650 million to support EV uptake and infrastructure.
- Electric cars accounted for a fifth of UK vehicle registrations with almost 30,000 new EVs registered in July 2025, while petrol, diesel, and hybrid sales declined by at least 7.9 percent.
- Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said this effort backs drivers, puts money into pockets, and creates jobs and growth, supporting goals of 300,000 public chargers by 2030 and an 80% zero-emission registration target.
