New Zealand Goes Dark as Worldwide Earth Hour Begins
Landmarks, businesses, and homes in 118 countries switched off lights to highlight climate change and nature loss, with over 3 million hours pledged worldwide, WWF said.
- Landmarks including the Sky Tower and Harbour Bridge in Auckland and Wellington went dark on Saturday, marking the start of the 20th Earth Hour in New Zealand.
- Originating in Australia in 2006, the World Wide Fund movement encourages participants to turn off lights for 60 minutes to draw attention to climate change and nature loss.
- Throughout the night, other iconic monuments across the globe switched off their lights, including the Sydney Opera House, Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, and the Empire State Building in New York.
- "Currently, the climate crisis is repeatedly pushed into the background in light of the many global challenges. On the contrary, it exacerbates many of these crises," said WWF Germany's head of climate Viviane Raddatz.
- Supporters pledged more than 3 million hours across more than 118 countries last year, demonstrating the event remains relevant 20 years after its inception, according to WWF International.
