Life in jail for father who murdered his premature son - causing injuries 'akin to a fall from a multi-storey building'
Daniel Gunter was sentenced to life with a minimum of 20 years for inflicting fatal injuries on his 14-day-old premature son in a hospital neonatal unit.
- On March 5 last year, Daniel Gunter killed his 14-day-old son Brendon in the special care baby unit at Yeovil District Hospital and was jailed for life with a minimum term of 20 years.
- Before Brendon’s birth, authorities had warned they might remove him due to precarious housing and Gunter’s controlling, violent behaviour toward Sophie Staddon.
- Medical experts testified that post-mortem showed a fractured skull, broken neck and jaw, leg fractures, and catastrophic internal bleeding, while nurses at Yeovil District Hospital said Gunter overstimulated the infant and removed his tubes.
- The sentencing judge said no sentence could ease Brendon’s family’s grief, while Detective Chief Inspector Nadine Partridge, Avon and Somerset Police, and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust called the case incomprehensible and distressing.
- A formal safeguarding review is under way involving the hospital and other agencies, with findings expected later this year, while Sophie Staddon was acquitted and both parents were arrested shortly afterward.
