Local Special Olympians return from Italy with an abundance of medals
- The 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games were held in Turin, Italy, from March 8-16, with over 1,500 athletes participating in sports like alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, and snowshoeing.
- Special Olympics USA sent a 160-member delegation to the Games, where athletes had the opportunity to experience new cultures and build friendships, according to Head of Delegation Brock Banos.
- Athletes from Illinois, including Daniel Johnson from Normal, Mallory Marvin from Libertyville, and Brandon Waller from Palatine, competed in the Games, with Waller winning a gold medal, and athletes from Alaska, Sulynnette Vega-Ledesma from Anchorage, Nathaniel Hunt from Wasilla, and Teagan Lockwood from Fairbanks, also participated, earning medals in snowboarding and alpine skiing.
- Sulynnette Vega-Ledesma noted that the pizza in Italy was a highlight, and Nathaniel Hunt expressed excitement about the possibility of competing in the next World Winter Games, while Deborah Percy, a coach, said, "Their perseverance and passion was truly inspiring."
- Special Olympics Team Canada brought home 116 medals, including 39 gold and 42 bronze, and 6 athletes from the Calgary area won a combined total of 10 medals, demonstrating the athletes' hard work and dedication.
