Lewis Hamilton 'Heart Sank' as Ferrari Went Against Tyre Instinct
Ferrari’s slick-tyre gamble left Hamilton more than a minute behind before he recovered to third with a late pass on Isack Hadjar.
At the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, Ferrari gambled on slick tires for the restart following a 33-minute delay, leaving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc struggling as the track remained slippery.
Ferrari opted for soft compound tires, believing the Sepang circuit was drying out; however, the track remained wet, forcing Hamilton to endure a difficult start as intermediate-shod competitors gained time.
Seeing Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli on intermediates, Hamilton recounted his heart sinking as he fell one minute behind; he chose to stick with slicks, waiting for the circuit to dry.
Despite the early deficit, Hamilton recovered to secure a podium finish following strong pit stops, later joking he would not "go to the casino with the guys" after the team's gamble failed.
With the car performing well, Ferrari aims to regroup after the race, and Hamilton expects to challenge Max Verstappen for the win in Singapore next week.
