Progressive William Lawrence defeats GOP Rep. Tom Barrett in swing Michigan district
The progressive co-founder of the Sunrise Movement won after campaigning on a moratorium for new data centers and tighter AI rules.
On Wednesday, progressive Will Lawrence defeated Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, securing victory in one of the nation's most competitive House races.
Lawrence centered his campaign on opposition to local data center development, tapping into widespread voter anger over proposed hyperscale projects near Mason that threatened farmland and community resources.
Karl Sime, a Mason resident, told The Intercept that "100 percent" of voters were angry about the proposed data center, while a recent Politico poll found half of Americans oppose facilities within 3 miles of their house.
Although Barrett cast Lawrence as too far left for the swing district due to his Democratic Socialists membership, the progressive candidate successfully mobilized voters around the data center issue, overcoming ideological attacks.
The victory marks a rare battleground win for the Democratic Party's left flank, suggesting Lawrence's data-center-focused approach offers progressives a potential roadmap for winning in evenly divided districts nationwide.
