Leopard captured after wandering into Indonesian hotel

The leopard was tranquilised and captured after entering the hotel, possibly linked to a recent zoo escape about 5 km away, officials said.

  • On Monday, a leopard was captured after it wandered into a hotel complex in Bandung, the capital of West Java, Indonesia, prompting panic among guests.
  • Hotel management alerted firefighters, who then contacted the local conservation agency, while authorities probe whether a late-August zoo escape about five kilometres from the hotel is connected.
  • Agus Arianto said officials used a tranquiliser and removed the animal at around 10am after it was spotted Monday morning outside a second-floor guest room, then placed inside a cage.
  • `Currently, the leopard is slowly regaining consciousness. It has started to growl`, Agus Arianto said, adding it will take time to confirm its identity and it will be taken to a conservation facility for observation.
  • Recent years have seen multiple zoo escapes in Indonesia, including two Bengal tigers from Singkawang, West Kalimantan, with a 47-year-old male zookeeper and several animals found dead, prompting scrutiny of Indonesia's zoos.
