Lebanon inaugurates René Mouawad Airport as its second international airport
Officials said the airport will begin flights within weeks to Istanbul, Mersin and Dubai as Lebanon seeks to ease pressure on Beirut’s main hub.
Lebanon inaugurated René Mouawad Airport in Akkar as the country's second international hub, expected to open to the public within weeks.
Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport has served as the nation's sole international gateway, operating near capacity while situated near a Hezbollah stronghold subjected to heavy Israeli bombardment.
Rehabilitation begins next week, with the passenger terminal expected to be completed "within 90 days after completing the required approvals and licenses." The facility aims to handle about 114,000 passengers in its first year, rising to more than 600,000 by its fourth year.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam led the inauguration ceremony, framing the project as a step toward "balanced development and justice between regions." Transportation Minister Fayez Rasamny stated the goal is to make the airport "operational in a few weeks."
Initial routes will include Mersin, Istanbul, and Dubai, with future plans to expand connections to Saudi Arabia, Cairo, and Athens. Lebanon is in contact with low-cost carriers like Ryanair and Pegasus before full operations commence in November 2026.
