Kīlauea Erupts, Spewing Lava 1,000 Feet Into the Air for Five Hours
Lava fountains reached up to 1,500 feet, covering 80% of Halema'uma'u crater floor with lava, with eruptions producing 13 million cubic yards of lava, USGS reported.
- On Nov. 9, 2025, Kilauea erupted under a Code Orange volcano watch, with lava fountains reaching 1,500 feet from the south vent and 1,100 feet from the north vent inside Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
- The current episodic eruption began on Dec. 23, 2024 and mimics lava fountaining not seen since the 1983–86 Pu'u ʻŌʻō eruption, United States Geological Survey data show.
- Episode 36 began Sunday and produced nearly five hours of continuous fountaining, generating about 13 million cubic yards of lava at 500 cubic yards per second.
- Hazards from the eruption include volcanic gas, ash, pumice and Pele's hair that can travel more than 10 miles, while flows covered nearly 80% of the Halema'uma'u crater floor.
- The eruption series continues to vary in size and frequency, as most fountaining episodes last about a day or less and Episode 35 last month produced the highest fountain.
