Latvia Briefly Warns of Airspace Threat, Says NATO Jets Activated
Latvia said the object left its airspace within 30 minutes as NATO fighter jets and a BLAZE interceptor responded, officials said.
On Sunday, the Latvian military reported a brief intrusion by an unidentified flying object into its airspace near the borders with Belarus and Russia. The threat ended within 30 minutes after authorities warned residents to stay indoors.
Ukrainian drones occasionally stray into NATO airspace while targeting Russian Baltic Sea oil ports, as Russia uses electronic warfare to deflect attacks. These incidents create security concerns for neighboring countries including Estonia and Finland.
The incursion occurred near the border towns of Kraslava and Ludza, prompting the Defense Ministry to deploy a BLAZE interceptor drone. The military stated on X, "If you notice a low-flying or suspicious object, do not approach."
Similar incidents have triggered security alerts across the region; an October drone explosion in Lithuania damaged a civilian vehicle, and Romanian F-16s shot down incursions in national airspace. Estonia discovered a drone with a 5-kilogram warhead in June.
NATO members generally blame Russia for these incidents, citing the conflict that began with the invasion of Ukraine nearly five years ago. In Latvia, such security challenges previously contributed to government collapse earlier this year.
