Thousands Evacuated From Spanish Resort of Tarifa over Advancing Fire
ANDALUSIA, SPAIN, AUG 11 – More than 3,700 residents, visitors, and hotel workers were evacuated as wildfires consumed 283 hectares amid Spain's worst wildfire season in recent years, officials said.
- On Monday, authorities began preventive evacuation of homes in Tarifa, impacting 1,500 locals and visitors near Playa de Atlanterra and Playa de Bolonia, as fires advanced.
- Faced with massive wildfires, Spain's Ecological Transition Ministry reported around 39,155 hectares burned between 1 January and 3 August this year.
- More than 100 troops, including four firefighting brigades, evacuated workers and guests of Cortijo and Meliá Zahara hotels, plus around 1,500 in La Peña area, on Monday.
- On Monday, the Guardia Civil asked evacuees to leave by the beach, as residents in Montaña de Los Alemanes and Sierra de la Plata were also evacuated as a precaution.
- Notably, local authorities declared two days ago that a previous fire had been extinguished, even as the region surrounding Tarifa faced another forest fire less than a week earlier.
