Largest Male Great White Shark Ever Recorded Pinged Off New Jersey Coast
Contender, a 1,653-pound male great white shark, has traveled over 4,300 miles from Florida to New Jersey, tracked by OCEARCH to study seasonal migration patterns.
- On November 12, 2025, OCEARCH said Contender, the tagged adult male great white shark, reemerged in waters off southern New Jersey near Atlantic City.
- Tagged in January off the Florida–Georgia coastline, Contender migrated north into Canadian waters, including near Newfoundland, before being pinged moving south Oct. 27-29 for fall migration.
- OCEARCH data shows Contender is 1,653 pounds and 13 feet long, estimated about 32 years old, with tags reporting data for five years via Argos satellite pings requiring his dorsal fin to break the surface.
- The group posts tracking data online and says it is `tracking every move`, with sightings up in Maine and Canada this year prompting some beach closures and warnings while interactions remain rare.
- OCEARCH's broader tracking shows other tagged sharks making long migrations, with Ernst, female white shark, moving to the Florida Keys and tiger sharks and hammerheads also traveling along the Atlantic coast.
