Lahaina Residents Deliver Petition Asking Hawaii Governor To Delay Tourism Reopening
- Over 14,000 people have signed a petition opposing the reopening of the region affected by the deadly U.S. Wildfire near Lahaina. Many residents feel mentally and emotionally unprepared to welcome visitors due to the freshness of their grief and profound losses.
- Despite the opposition, some residents need tourism to work and earn a living in hotels and restaurants. The rest of West Maui, a major section including Lahaina, will reopen to tourists on October 8. Other areas, where most evacuees are staying, will reopen at a later date.
- The ash from the fire contains harmful substances including asbestos and hydrocarbons, and experts warn that it must be sealed to prevent it from becoming airborne and affecting human health. The spray Soiltac has been used to control the ash and prevent its spread.
